Heating sources changed over the years

It was only about 100 years ago that the move started away from Solid Fuels like wood and coal for home heating. 

Liquid Fuels' days of heating glory began after the First World War and continued until the oil price rises of the 1970s.

Gaseous Fuels became more commonplace with urbanization and the spread of pipeline networks.

Electricity plays an important role in home heating where it can be generated cheaply and where gas is not available.
